Het koninkrijk was een opvolger van het middeleeuwse Lanna-koninkrijk, dat was geannexeerd. stond twee eeuwen onder Birmese heerschappij totdat het in 1774 werd veroverd door Siamese troepen onder Taksin van Thonburi. Het werd geregeerd door de Thipchak-dynastie en kwam onder de zijrivier van Thonburi.
