Anyi, Nanchang, Jiangxi, ChinaDe Xia-dynastie van China (van ca. 2070 tot ca. 1600 vGT) is de vroegste van de drie dynastieën die worden beschreven in oude historische documenten zoals Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Historian en Bamboo Annals. De dynastie wordt door westerse geleerden over het algemeen als mythisch beschouwd. maar in China wordt het meestal geassocieerd met de vindplaats uit de vroege bronstijd in Erlitou die in 1959 in Henan werd opgegraven. Aangezien er in Eritou of enige andere gelijktijdige vindplaats geen geschrift is opgegraven, is er geen manier om te bewijzen of de Xia-dynastie ooit heeft bestaan. Hoe het ook zij, de site van Erlitou had een niveau van politieke organisatie dat niet onverenigbaar zou zijn met de legenden van Xia die in latere teksten zijn opgetekend. Belangrijker nog is dat de site van Erlitou het vroegste bewijs bevat voor een elite die rituelen uitvoerde met behulp van gegoten bronzen vaten, die zou later worden geadopteerd door de Shang en Zhou.

Sima Qian aspired to compile history and toured around China
Sima Qian (c. 145 – c. 86 BCE) was a Chinese historian of the early Han dynasty (206 BCE – CE 220). He is considered the father of Chinese historiography for his Records of the Grand Historian, a general history of China covering more than two thousand years beginning from the rise of the legendary Yellow Emperor and the formation of the first Chinese polity to the reigning sovereign of Sima Qian's time, Emperor Wu of Han. As the first universal history of the world as it was known to the ancient Chinese, the Records of the Grand Historian served as a model for official history-writing for subsequent Chinese dynasties and the Chinese cultural sphere (Korea, Vietnam, Japan) up until the 20th century.
