Hij werd al snel de belangrijkste Turkse potentaat in Noord-Syrië en Irak , nam Aleppo over van de kibbelende Artuqids in 1128 en veroverde daarna het graafschap Edessa op de kruisvaarders. de belegering van Edessa in 1144.
