De Gaza-oorlog, ook bekend als Operation Cast Lead door Israel en het Gaza Massacre in de moslimwereld genoemd, was een conflict van drie weken tussen Palestijnse paramilitaire groepen in de Gazastrook en de Israel Defense Forces (IDF), duren van 27 december 2008 tot 18 januari 2009. Het conflict eindigde met een UNILATERAL CESSEVIRE en resulteerde in de doden van 1,169 en 13 Israëli's, waaronder 4 van Friendly Fire. [242]
Het conflict werd voorafgegaan aan het einde van een staakt-het-vuren van zes maanden tussen Israël en Hamas op 4 november, toen de IDF Central Gaza overviel om een tunnel te vernietigen, waarbij verschillende Hamas-militanten werden gedood. Israël beweerde dat de inval een preventieve aanval was tegen een potentiële ontvoeringsdreiging, [243] terwijl Hamas het zag als een staakt -het -vuren -schending, wat leidde tot raketvuur in Israël. [244] Pogingen om de wapenstilstand te vernieuwen, mislukten en Israël initieerde operatie die op 27 december lead castte om raketbrand te stoppen, gericht op politiebureaus, militaire en politieke locaties en dichtbevolkte gebieden in Gaza, Khan Yunis en Rafah. Een Israëlische grondinvasie begon op 3 januari, met operaties in de stedelijke centra van Gaza vanaf 5 januari. In de laatste week van het conflict bleef Israël zich richten op eerder beschadigde locaties en Palestijnse raket-lanceringseenheden. Hamas escaleerde raket- en mortelaanvallen en bereikte Beersheba en Ashdod. [246] Het conflict eindigde met het unilaterale staakt-het-vuren van Israël op 18 januari, gevolgd door het staakt-het-vuren van Hamas. De IDF voltooide zijn opname vóór 21 januari.
In september 2009 produceerde een speciale VN -missie onder leiding van Richard Goldstone een rapport dat beide kanten van oorlogsmisdaden en mogelijke misdaden tegen de menselijkheid beschuldigde. [247] In 2011 trok Goldstone zijn overtuiging in dat Israël opzettelijk gericht was op burgers, [248] Een visie die niet werd gedeeld door de andere rapportauteurs. [249] De VN -mensenrechtenraad benadrukte dat 75% van de vernietigde burgerhuizen in september 2012 niet werd herbouwd. [250]
