Anyi, Nanchang, Jiangxi, ChinaXia-dynastiet i Kina (fra ca. 2070 til ca. 1600 f.v.t. er det tidligste af de tre dynastier beskrevet i gamle historiske optegnelser såsom Sima Qians optegnelser over den store historiker og bambusannaler. Dynastiet anses generelt for mytisk af vestlige forskere, men i Kina er det normalt forbundet med det tidlige bronzealdersted ved Erlitou, der blev udgravet i Henan i 1959. Da der ikke blev udgravet noget skrift ved Eritou eller noget andet samtidig sted, er der ingen måde at bevise, om Xia-dynastiet nogensinde har eksisteret. i hvert fald havde Erlitou-stedet et politisk organisationsniveau, der ikke ville være uforeneligt med legenderne om Xia, der er optaget i senere tekster. Endnu vigtigere er, at Erlitou-stedet har de tidligste beviser for en elite, der udførte ritualer ved hjælp af støbte bronzebeholdere, som senere ville blive adopteret af Shang og Zhou.

Sima Qian aspired to compile history and toured around China
Sima Qian (c. 145 – c. 86 BCE) was a Chinese historian of the early Han dynasty (206 BCE – CE 220). He is considered the father of Chinese historiography for his Records of the Grand Historian, a general history of China covering more than two thousand years beginning from the rise of the legendary Yellow Emperor and the formation of the first Chinese polity to the reigning sovereign of Sima Qian's time, Emperor Wu of Han. As the first universal history of the world as it was known to the ancient Chinese, the Records of the Grand Historian served as a model for official history-writing for subsequent Chinese dynasties and the Chinese cultural sphere (Korea, Vietnam, Japan) up until the 20th century.
