Prima cafenea din Anglia a fost deschisă la Oxford în 1652. La Londra, prima a fost deschisă mai târziu în același an la St Michael's Alley, Cornhill, de un grec excentric pe nume Pasqua Roseé. Curând au fost obișnuiți.
