
Mozes wordt beschouwd als de belangrijkste profeet in het jodendom en een van de belangrijkste profeten in het christendom , de islam, het druzen geloof, het Baháʼí -geloof en andere Abrahamische religies. Volgens zowel de Bijbel als de koran was Mozes de leider van de Israëlieten en de wetgever aan wie het auteurschap, of 'acquisitie van de hemel', van de Torah (de eerste vijf boeken van de Bijbel) wordt toegeschreven.
Over het algemeen wordt Mozes gezien als een legendarische figuur, terwijl hij de mogelijkheid behoudt dat Mozes of een Mozes-achtige figuur bestond in de 13e eeuw v.Chr. Rabbinisch jodendom berekende een levensduur van Mozes die overeenkomt met 1391–1271 v.Chr.; Jerome suggereerde 1592 v.Chr. En James Ussher stelde 1571 v.Chr. Voor als zijn geboortejaar.
