En 1373, Ivan Shishman, el emperador búlgaro , se vio obligado a negociar un humillante tratado de paz: se convirtió en vasallo otomano fortaleciendo la unión con un matrimonio entre Murad y la hermana de Shishman, Kera Tamara.Para compensar, los otomanos devolvieron algunas de las tierras conquistadas, incluidas Ihtiman y Samokov.
