Marie Joseph Louis Adolphe Thiers was born on 15 April 1797 in Marseille. His father, Pierre-Louis-Marie Thiers, was a businessman who abandoned the family shortly after his birth. Thiers' mother, Marie-Madeleine Amic, raised him with limited means, but he received a good education through the support of relatives. He studied law in Aix-en-Provence and became a lawyer in 1818. Thiers moved to Paris in 1821, where he began a career in journalism, writing for influential publications and gaining recognition for his political commentary.Thiers authored a ten-volume history of the French Revolution, published between 1823 and 1827, which was well-received and established his reputation as a historian. He played a significant role in the July Revolution of 1830, which led to the overthrow of King Charles X and the establishment of a constitutional monarchy under Louis Philippe. Thiers held various political positions, including Minister of the Interior and Prime Minister, and was involved in significant events such as the suppression of the June Rebellion in 1832 and the return of Napoleon's remains from Saint Helena.Thiers initially supported Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte but later opposed him, especially after the latter's coup in 1851. Following the defeat of France in the Franco-Prussian War, Thiers was elected as the chief executive of the new French government. He negotiated the end of the war and ordered the suppression of the Paris Commune in 1871. In August 1871, he was elected President of the Republic, becoming the first president of the Third French Republic. His presidency was marked by the withdrawal of German troops from French territory ahead of schedule, but he faced opposition from both monarchists and left-wing republicans.Thiers resigned on 24 May 1873 amid political tensions and was succeeded by Patrice de MacMahon. He continued to be active in politics until his death on 3 September 1877. Thiers was also a prolific historian, writing a twenty-volume history of the Consulate and Empire of Napoleon Bonaparte. His works contributed to the understanding of French history and politics during a tumultuous period. Thiers' funeral in 1877 was a significant political event, attended by prominent figures of the republican movement, reflecting his complex legacy in French history.
