Rome declares War on Carthage

Mediterranean Sea

Rome complained to the Carthaginian government regarding the siege and capture of Saguntum, sending an embassy to its senate with peremptory demands.   When these were rejected Rome declared war in spring 218 BCE. The Second Punic War began.
