The Battle of Rovine occurred on 17 May 1395, between the Wallachian army led by Voivod Mircea the Elder and the Ottoman forces commanded by Sultan Bayezid I. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Wallachians, leveraging skilled archers, significantly depleted Ottoman ranks. Notably, Serbian lords Stefan Lazarević and Marko Mrnjavčević, fighting for the Ottomans, showed valor, with Marko perishing in the battle.

While traditionally seen as a one-day confrontation, some sources suggest the battle spanned a week, marked initially by positional warfare. The Wallachians inflicted heavy casualties but could not overcome the Ottoman Janissaries' defense, leading to a tactical withdrawal. This battle is crucial in Romanian history as it halted Ottoman conquest efforts in Wallachia at that time.
