Wilhelm I, born Wilhelm Friedrich Louis on 22 March 1797 in Berlin, was the second son of Prince Frederick William and Louise of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. He was not initially expected to become king, as his elder brother, Frederick William IV, was the heir. Wilhelm received military training and became an officer at a young age, serving with distinction during the Napoleonic Wars, where he earned the Iron Cross for bravery. He rose through the ranks, becoming a major and later a general, and played a significant role in the Prussian military during the early 19th century.In 1840, following the ascension of his brother to the throne, Wilhelm became the heir presumptive. He was involved in suppressing the Revolutions of 1848, which earned him the nickname 'Prince of Grapeshot' due to his use of force. After a brief exile in England, he returned to command the Prussian army in various uprisings. In 1858, he became Prince Regent after his brother suffered a debilitating stroke, and he swore an oath to uphold the Prussian constitution.Wilhelm ascended to the throne as King of Prussia in January 1861. His reign began with conflict over military funding, leading him to appoint Otto von Bismarck as Minister President to push through his military reforms. Under Wilhelm's leadership, Prussia achieved significant military victories in the Second Schleswig War and the Austro-Prussian War, establishing itself as the dominant German power. The unification of Germany was completed in 1871 after the Franco-Prussian War, and Wilhelm was proclaimed German Emperor, a title he accepted reluctantly.Despite his position, Wilhelm largely delegated governance to Bismarck, who managed domestic and foreign affairs. Wilhelm faced multiple assassination attempts, which led to the implementation of the Anti-Socialist Laws aimed at suppressing socialist movements. In 1888, Wilhelm I died at the age of 90 after a brief illness. He was succeeded by his son Frederick, who reigned for only 99 days before his own death, leading to the ascension of Wilhelm II.Wilhelm I's legacy includes numerous memorials and monuments throughout Germany, reflecting his role in the unification of the German Empire and his status as a symbol of the old Prussian values.
