
Ivan morreu de um derrame enquanto jogava xadrez com Bogdan Belsky em 28 de março de 1584. Após a morte de Ivan, o trono russo foi deixado para seu filho do meio inapto, Feodor, uma figura de mente fraca. Boris Godunov tomou acusação de governo. Feodor morreu sem filhos em 1598, que levou o tempo dos problemas.
