
Em 1489, as forças cristãs iniciaram um cerco dolorosamente longo de Baza, a fortaleza mais importante que restava para Al-Zagal. Baza era altamente defensável, pois exigia que os cristãos dividissem seus exércitos, e a artilharia era de pouca utilidade contra ele. O fornecimento do exército causou um enorme déficit orçamentário para os castelos. As ameaças ocasionais de privação do cargo eram necessárias para manter o exército no campo, e Isabella veio pessoalmente ao cerco para ajudar a manter o moral dos nobres e dos soldados. Depois de seis meses, Al-Zagal se rendeu, apesar de sua guarnição ainda estar em grande parte ileso; Ele havia se convencido de que os cristãos levavam a sério a manutenção do cerco o tempo que levaria, e mais resistência era inútil sem a esperança de alívio, do qual não havia sinal.
