Nel IX e X secolo, i Vichinghi hanno fatto irruzione nelle città di Frisia e Frankish in gran parte indifeso che giacevano sulla costa e lungo i fiumi dei paesi bassi. Sebbene i vichinghi non si sono mai stabiliti in gran numero in quelle aree, hanno creato basi a lungo termine e sono stati persino riconosciuti come signori in alcuni casi. Nella tradizione storica olandese e frisiana, il centro commerciale di Dorestad è diminuito dopo che i raid vichinghi da 834 a 863; Tuttavia, poiché non sono state trovate prove archeologiche vichinghe convincenti nel sito (a partire dal 2007), i dubbi su questo sono cresciuti negli ultimi anni.
Una delle famiglie vichinghe più importanti nei paesi bassi era quella di Rorik di Dorestad (con sede a Wieringen) e suo fratello "Youn più Harald" (con sede a Walcheren), entrambi pensavano essere nipoti di Harald Klak. Intorno all'850, Lothair ho riconosciuto Rorik come sovrano della maggior parte della Friesland. E di nuovo nell'870, Rorik fu ricevuto da Charles il calvo a Nijmegen, a cui divenne un vassallo. I raid vichinghi continuarono durante quel periodo. Il figlio di Harald Rodulf e i suoi uomini furono uccisi dal popolo di Oostergo nell'873. Rorik morì prima dell'882.
Le incursioni vichinghe dei paesi bassi continuarono per oltre un secolo. I resti di attacchi vichinghi risalenti all'880 a 890 sono stati trovati in Zutphen e Deventir. Nel 920, il re Enrico di Germania liberava Utrecht. Secondo un certo numero di cronache, gli ultimi attacchi hanno avuto luogo nel primo decennio dell'XI secolo e sono stati diretti a Tiel e/o Utrecht. Queste incursioni vichinghe si verificarono nello stesso momento in cui i signori francesi e tedeschi stavano combattendo per la supremazia nell'impero medio che includeva i Paesi Bassi, quindi la loro influenza su quest'area era debole. La resistenza ai Vichinghi, se presente, proveniva dai nobili locali, che di conseguenza ottennero in statura.
