Зенгі, сын Ак Сункур аль-Хаджыба, стаў атабегам сельджукаў Масула ў 1127 г. Ён хутка стаў галоўным цюркскім уладаром у Паўночнай Сірыі і Іраку , узяўшы Алепа ў сварачых Артукідаў у 1128 г. і захапіўшы графства Эдэса ў крыжакоў пасля таго, як аблога Эдэсы ў 1144 г.
