When Madhavrao died, there was a power struggle between the brother of Madhavrao (who became Pesha) and Raghunathrao, who wanted to become Peshwa of the empire. The British East India Company, from its base in Bombay, intervened in a succession struggle in Pune, on behalf of Raghunathrao.
